Description
The cold darkness had returned. The roof pegs were white with frost and the window panes were gray. When a hole was made in it, all that could be seen through the glass was a single, rapidly spinning white. The strong house shook and shook. The wind howled. Upside down. Mother tucked the knitted rugs under the doors, but the cold crawled in. In the morning and in the evening, Dad took the rope and went to the stable to feed the horses, cows and calves. He had to cover dry grass. He came indoors so cold that it was difficult for him to warm himself. Sitting in front of the stove, he sat Grace on his knee and held Carey close, telling Mary and Laura the stories about bears and leopards.
