Kulavamiya came down the stairs from Valav’s porch and stopped at the bottom step. Mrs. Ruvathi Aga Mehesiya was covering her neck and legs with osier cloth because of the cold. All eyes were on her. Her eyes were fixed on Tavalamrala. Beside her sits her most trusted friend, Heing, carrying a silver tray with a small cloth slung over her shoulder. As per the custom, tutupaduru is offered first to Tavalamrala Lady Dingirala, who was a charioteer, was coming across the yard to approach the lady. Dingirala, with a thick beard growing over his face, displayed all the characteristics of leadership, walking straight and sitting close to the Lady. As he got closer, her cheeks turned red. Dressed in white socks and a dark saree, Hun Tavalamrala untied the blue scarf tied around his head and put it around his neck. His sharp eyes were focused directly on hers. A silent secret was written between those eyes that could not be told to each other. Her eyes were blazing with an unknown fire the next moment, just like the torches and firecrackers resting on the banana trees in the cave yard, burning the early darkness. She moistened the still sore lips with her tongue….
