Aitmatov was born on December 12, 1928 in Kyrgyzstan, Soviet Union. His father was a Communist Party official who was executed in the late 1930s in the “Great Expulsion” operation led by Soviet leader Joseph Starling. Aitmatov’s literary career began between 1952 and 1957 when he worked as the Kyrgyz correspondent of Pravda newspaper. |
